Self Introduction and First Post

はじめまして、

どうぞよろしく。

Translation: [My name] is Bedford. My hobbies are sports, reading, and math. I love tea! Also, I like cats. Lets get to know each other!

I’m Savannah Bedford, and I’m very excited to take this Japanese class! Unlike many of my classmates, I’ve had some background in the language but I really needed a reminder of some basic conventions before moving to the upper levels. Through this class, I want to cement speaking in conversation as a strength in my Japanese abilities. There’s so much about that I love about Japanese culture that I’m not sure where to start. The food is something that I absolutely love. I can’t get enough of らめん, もち, おやつぱん, あんこ, and pretty much anything まちゃ flavored. I also have quite a penchant for tea.

I’m currently studying to be an engineer and I hope to use my Japanese skills to communicate with, or even work for companies in Japan. I’ve never travelled to Japan so I am hoping to take advantage of a study abroad or summer program during my time here.

  1. I am horrible at Japanese so this was painful to read especially the ベッドーフォード part. I could not figure out what "beddoufoudo" could possibly mean in English until I clicked the "read more" button and found the translation.
何は一の上にも三年とですか。I only got the "three years" part.

    1. Sorry for the confusion! My last name doesn't adjust well into the Japanese language. 一の上にも三年 is a Japanese proverb- I believe it literally translates to something like "sit on a rock for three years" but the proverbial meaning is 'patience wins the day'. I thought it was very fitting for a language class!

    1. I've studied Japanese throughout high school and even in a bit of middle school, but my school really lacked attention to speaking, and instead prepared us for the IB exam. Thats a bit different than preparing for real life language skills! It's cool to hear that you also know a bit of Japanese- I'm not alone in that aspect haha. Were you also enrolled in classes or did you pursue self study?

      がんばって!

  4. That is awesome that you already have a background in Japanese! I cannot wait to learn more about Japanese culture so I think it's awesome that you already know a lot about it. It is also super cool that you are studying Japanese and plan to incorporate that into your future in the engineering field. I'm sure it will be very useful for your future!

    Hello!
    I am Tokuda, Teaching Assistant.

What kind of sports do you like?
I also like まっちゃflavour. I brought some maccha tea from Japan.
I recommend you to visit Kyotoきょうと when you travel in Japan. There are lots of sweets flavoured with まっちゃ.
Please ask me about Japanese culture if you want, or just chatting is also welcomed.
    Let's enjoy learning Japanese together!
